Nicholas A van Petten1,2

M, #211, b. 16 December 1716, d. 27 January 1790
  • He was baptized on 16 December 1716 in Schenectady, Albany, New York, USA.3,4
  • He was the son of Nicholas van Petten and Rebecca Groot.3,4
  • He was Blacksmith in 1766.4
  • He served in the American Revolution circa 1778 in New York, USA. He is listed as a veteran of Col Wemple's Regt. He is also credited as serving as a Private in Colonel Cuyler's regiment in Albany County, New York Militia. I don't know if either or both or correct. I also notice that the DAR referenece (2124) indicates he was born in Guilderland and died in Schenectady which is the opposite of a few other sources claim. There is a colorful story of his arrest and confinement as a Torry sympathiser (in Old Hellerbergh
) prior to his apparent military sevice noted above.5,6,4
  • He died on 27 January 1790 in Guilderland, Albany, New York, USA, at age 73.4

  • VAN PATTEN FAMILY BURIAL GROUND, located on the former Jeffers farm, Amsterdam Road (Rt. 5), Glenville, New York. The burial plot is situated some distance southwest of the house on the river flats under a large oak tree. Two unlettered fieldstones. Site visited August 28, 1967. This was the family burial ground of Nicholas S. Van Patten. His obituary, published in "The Schenectady Cabinet", Wednesday, July 15, 1829 reads as follows:
"DIED - - In Glenville, on Wednesday last, MR. NICHOLAS VAN PATTEN, an old and respectable citizen of that town, in the 80th year of his age".
His son, John N. Van Patten, inherited the farm and members of his family are said to be buried where the garage on the Jeffers property now stands. The farm passed out of the Van Patten family in 1848.1
  • He was born on 21 October 1750 in Glenville, Albany, New York, USA.1
  • He was the son of Simon Nicholas van Petten and Jannetje Vrooman.1
  • Nicholas Simon Van Petten served in the Rev. War. (historian - Hanson) "was a captain of the scouts and was with the two Mohawks, Nick and Stoner Nick who killed the Tory, Butler. His grave is on the flats and is a simple marking on field stone" - the farm was left to his son, John Nicholas - from a news clipping. He operated a tavern on Sacandaga Turnpike known locally as "Lower Nicky's" as there were two taverns on that road run by two Nicholas Van Patten's.
*alternate death date - 15 Jul 1829 (Maybee) circa 1778.1,2
  • He died on 8 July 1829 in Glenville, Schenectady, New York, USA, at age 78.1
