Father*Joseph Bullock van Petten2,1 b. 27 Jun 1813, d. Jun 1889
Mother*Nancy Maria Kingsbury1 b. Oct 1817, d. 2 Dec 1898
Ellen Maria van Petten was also known as Ella.3 She was born on 28 August 1859 in Strawberry Twp, Oswego, New York, USA; Birth date computed based on age of 29y 5m 6d on headstone. This is more consistent than the 1860 date since she appeared on the 1860 Federal census as age 7m.4 She was the daughter of Joseph Bullock van Petten and Nancy Maria Kingsbury.2,1 She was born on 28 September 1860 in Strawberry Twp, Oswego, New York, USA. This date of birth is not consitent with the fact that she appears on the 1860 US Census, age 7 months. The census was dated August 7 which is a couple of months prior to the September 28th date.1 She married Harvey Leigh Shatto on 3 October 1880 in Linn Twp, Washington, Kansas, USA. Van Patten Ancetry on Rootsweb shows a date of Sep 5, 1878. October 1880 is more consistent with the family lore that Ellen had to get married because she was pregnant with Harvey's child. The marriage record indicates they were married in Reiter which is a Post Office in Linn Twp.5,6 She and Harvey Leigh Shatto were divorced before 7 April 1887. An assumption based on the date of Harvey's marriage to Sarah Boyer.7 She married Dr Thaddeus J Campbell on 19 May 1888 in Ames, Cloud, Kansas, USA.8,9 She died on 3 February 1890 in Allen County, Kansas, USA, at age 30. The child and mother probably died as a result of complications of childbirth.10,3,1 She was buried on 11 February 1890 in Reiter Cemetery, Linn, Washington, Kansas, USA.3,9

Census Information

She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hannibal, Oswego, New York, USA, in the household of her parents, Joseph Bullock van Petten and Nancy Maria Kingsbury.11 She appeared on the 1875 Kansas State census of Sherman, Washington, Kansas, in the household of her parents, Joseph Bullock van Petten and Nancy Maria Kingsbury.12 She appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Sherman, Washington, Kansas, in the household of her parents, Joseph Bullock van Petten and Nancy Maria Kingsbury.13
