Dr. William Bullock Stewart, Sr. was born in 1892, in Washington County, KS, to Samuel and Emily Stewart. William grew up in Washington County, and then Clay Center, Clay County, KS. When he was a teenager, he worked in his father's brick manufacturing company. William was known to say that in his youth everything that he handled was either hot or hard. Because of this experience he resolved to get an education. He graduated from pharmacy school and dental school at an early age, and was commissioned in the US Army on 27MAR1919, prior to the end of World War I. He spent 30 years in the Army Dental Corps, and retired as a Colonel. While on active duty in the Army, he met his wife, Mary Catherine Phillips, in San Antonio, TX, and they were married in 1925 in San Antonio. His four children, William Bullock Stewart, Jr., Emily Catherine, Mary Ellen, and Roger Harvey Phillips were born while he was serving in various military postings. Upon retirement from the Army, Dr. Stewart practiced dentistry privately, in Clay Center, KS, for many years. In later years, he and his wife began to travel to Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and other locales during the Kansas winters, and return to Clay Center, KS, for the warmer months. His wife had abdominal medical problems in Italy on one of their trips, and was operated on there, resulting in removal of much of her intestines. She was flown back to Washington, DC to Walter Reed Army Medical Center , where she died shortly after, in 1978. His wifes remains were cremated and sent home to Clay Center, KS, and those affairs were handled by his daughter, Emily Catherine. He continued on for another 5 years, living at his daughter, Emily Catherine's house in Manhattan, KS. Emily was married to an Obstetrician/Gynecologist, named Gerald Mowry. While he was living there, he died of emaciation in 1983. This has raised questions in the family, regarding how someone could die of emaciation while living in the house of a licensed physician, particularly when you have more than enough money in the bank. His daughter had his remains cremated, and according to the funeral home, allowed his mother's maiden name of Van Petten to be mispelled as Van Pellen, which does not correspond to any of the families' other vital records for birth, marriage or death.
I have since learned that it's not uncommon to persons with dementia to be prone to severe weight loss for a variety of reasons. If William were suffering from dementia, it may have caused the emaciation.2 He was born on 21 September 1892 in Washington County, Kansas, USA.1,2 He was the son of Samuel Albert Stewart and Emily Harriet van Petten.2 He served in the US Army between 17 September 1917 and 30 September 1952, a period spanning WWI & WWII. He retired as a Colonel.3 He married Mary Catherine Phillips on 17 June 1925 in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas, USA.4,2 He died on 15 January 1983 in Manhattan, Riley, Kansas, USA, at age 90.5,6 He was buried after 15 January 1983 in Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center, Clay, Kansas, USA.7
