Johanna van Petten1
F, #3552, b. 17 June 1804
Capt Johannes van Patten1
M, #227, b. 9 April 1739, d. 10 January 1809
He was baptized on 9 April 1739 in
Schenectady, Schenectady, New York, USA.
3 He was the son of
Nicholas van Petten and
Rebecca Groot.
2 He was baptized on 29 April 1739 in
Schenectady, Schenectady, New York, USA.
1 He married
Neeltje (Eleanor) Vedder, daughter of
Simon Vedder and
Maria Truax, on 10 July 1762 in
Schenectady, Schenectady, New York, USA.
4,5,1 He served in the American Revolution from 1776 to 1780. On May 27, 1775, he was elected Captain of the 3rd Company of Schenectady Militia, and on October 20 a commission was issued in his name by the Provincial Congress. In Jan. 1776, he took part in the expedition to Johnstown. On Jan. 14, he was ordered to place guards at William De Graff's, Teunis Swart's and Lewis Peek's home to prevent any unfriendly persons or letters from passing upwards. On MAR177? he signed an agreement with Philip Schuyler for service at Lake George and Ticonderoga. On April 1, 1777, he was elected overseer of highways at Schenectady. He served throughout the campaign against General Burgoyne, was mentioned for bravery by General Gates in the "Battle of Saratoga" and was assigned to carry the news of the British surrender to Albany, according to family tradition. Captain Van Petten's company performed patrol and guard duty throughout his beat during the whole of the war, this being an especially exposed position. In 1778, he was at Switzbergh, in 1779 at Fort Paris, in 1780 in command of a detachment in pursuit of Sir John Johnson. Van Petten resigned from the service towards the close of the war.
6,7 He died on 10 January 1809 in
New York, USA, at age 69. Age on headstone is 69 years, 2 months, 22 days which results in a birthdate of October 19, 1739 which is inconsistent with the baptism record and also inconsistent with the birth date of September 29, 1739 provided in History of Schenectady during the Revolution.
6,8,1 He was buried after 10 January 1809 in
Teunis Swart Farm, West Charlton County, New York, USA.

John Baptist van Patten1

John Baptist
van Patten was also known as Jan Baptist.
1 Son of Simon and Maria, he lived to 64 years of age. John Baptist Van Patten married his 2nd cousin, Elizabeth (Betsey) Van Patten, 8 Mar 1806 at Schenectady, NY. (John and Elizabeth were both 4 X Great Grandchildren of Nicholas Van Patten and Rebecca Groot.)
Tony Giambra found this in August 2010. The following excerpts are from a letter written in 1985 from a staff member of the Sheboygan County County Historical Research Society to Julia Ritterbush in Bismark N.D.
> "I spent most of the day copying old gravestones which had been piled up behind woodlawn cemetery at Plymouth, WI." She goes on to tell of accessing copy records done by DAR IN 1946. " I realized that these stones had originally been in Plymouth's Union Cemetry" and "Among them was John Van Patten died Feb 26, 1868 age 83 yrs, 11 months, 9 days. It is possible that if Elizabeth (his wife)were buried there that her stone might have met an earlier fate."
The John Baptist Van Patten family first settled in North Perry, Lake Co., OH in 1831, after losing their property in Schenectady due to the duplicity of a friend. Then after 15 years thsy moved to Plymouth, WI in 1846. As there was only a trail from Sheboygan to plymouth the journey took several months. Daughter Jane soon met Stephen Thorp and they were the first to marry in the new town. They established a cheese making business but it was not mentioned in their joint will of 1865.
