MIlitary Service
Patrick James Calhoun served in World War II from 6 August 1937 to 5 October 1945. Native to Breathitt County, Kentucky Calhoun enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division during World War II. On June 6, 1944, he led a platoon ashore at Utah Beach as part of the Normandy Invasion by Allied forces under General Dwight D. Eisenhower. After 51 days of combat, Calhoun was wounded on July 26, 1944 during the battle of Saint-Lo, France and spent the remainder of the war in an Allied hospital in Cardiff, England. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the American Defense Service Ribbon, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with two Bronze Stars. He later received a medal from the French government commemorating the 50th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion and the liberation of France.
