Van Patten Butte, Van Patten Dam and Van Patten Lake in Baker County, Oregon is named for him.
George Van Patten was in partnership with his wife's parents, Orbison and Elizabeth Elliott, in a saw mill at the Bulger Flat area. They got water out of the river for a mill pond. VanPatten Butte and VanPatten Lake are both named after George. George built a dam at VanPatten Lake with a team of horses. He built this dam to bring water down to Bulger Flat to run the sawmill. While alone and working on the dam, George broke his leg but managed to get out and back home. All of his children were born at Bulger Flat and his wife Rosetta died there giving birth to their youngest son, Fred, who lived and was raised by his grandparents, Orbison and Elizabeth Elliott.
After Rosetta's death, George left the Bulger Flat area and went to the Walla Walla, Washington area for a period of time. Eventually, he returned to Eastern Oregon and homesteaded at the mouth of Dark Canyon on the Burnt River. He took his son Chester with him. Bulger Flat is Northwest of Baker and Dark Canyon is south.
* George's will requested he be buried underneath the White Rocks that were up by Abraham and Sadie La Veirs homestead ** that are at the fork of Dark Canyon and Red Springs Gulch (East fork of Dark Canyon). (Sadie La Veirs and Rosetta were sisters) George wasn't buried there ***, but some holes were drilled in the top of the White Rocks and some coins were placed in the holes as a memorial to George.
(Story told by Gordon Van Patten, April 1998.)1 He was born on 20 April 1847 in Cobourg, Northumberland West, Ontario, Canada.1 He was the son of William Roy van Patten and Sofia Rachel Dean.1 He married Rosetta S Elliott on 3 January 1878 in Baker City, Baker, Oregon, USA.1 He died on 1 May 1934 in Baker City, Baker, Oregon, USA, at age 87.1

From him our subject is of the sixth generation removed. In the third generation were several who participated in the Revolutionary war, there being about one hundred of the name belonging to one regiment. while one company of this regiment was commanded by Captain John Van Patten. Robert B. Van Patten, the father of our subject, was born in Cayuga county, New York, March 17, 1825, his parents being Peter and Lydia (Bullock) Van Patten.
George M. Van Patten was fourteen years of age when the family came to Iowa and he grew to manhood upon the home farm in Clarke County, in the meantime acquiring his education in the public schools. On attaining his majority he started out in life for himself and has since devoted his time and attention to farming. In 1897 he came to Warren County and after renting his present farm for a time he purchased it and has since engaged in its operation, having two hundred acres of well improved land under a high state of cultivation. He carries on stock-raising, making a specialty of Percheron horses, shorthorn cattle and Poland China hogs.
In 1891 Mr. Van Patten married Miss Annie Holden, of Clarke county, a daughter of C. C. and Deborah (Cramer) Holden, who came to this state from Illinois in 1878 and located in Clarke county. Her father, who was a farmer by occupation, is now deceased. Of the six children born to our subject and his wife three died in infancy. Those still living are, Nina L., Ethel L. and Loyd H., all at home.
The parents are active members of the Methodist Episcopal church and Mr. Van Patten is a republican in politics. He has filled various township offices in an able and acceptable manner and is now serving as township clerk. Socially he is identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
