  • Note
At the close of World War II, in April 1945 Truman appointed Edwin W. Pauley as the U.S. representative to the Allied Reparations Committee, with the rank of ambassador, as well as industrial and commercial advisor to the Potsdam Conference.
His Who's Who biography in 1954 states he was born in 1903 in Indiana to Elbert L. Pauley and the former Ellen Van Petten, that he attended Occidental College northeast of Los Angeles during 1919-20 before getting a degree from the University of California in Berkeley in 1922 and an M.S. a year later. It also indicates that he founded a company in 1923--an extremely adventuresome act for one so young--called Petrol Corp. The Petrol Corp.--a business that fueled oil tankers--was located at 4020 Bandini Blvd. in Los Angeles, California--southeast of downtown L.A. and to the west of the intersection of S. Atlantic Blvd.
    * The namesake of the Pauley Pavillion at UCLA. Facility dedicated 6/11/1965. A member and former chairman of the University's board of regents, Edwin donated $1M toward the facility.

Barbara Jean McHenry Pauley Pagen, one of the last members of the original McHenry family, died Monday (09SEP2002) at her home in Beverly Hills. She was 87.
Mrs. Pagen served on many corporate boards, but she remembered her roots.
"She still sang the old Modesto fight song," her son Stephen Pauley said. He said his mother died peacefully at home, but had been in declining health due to a series of small strokes in the last six years.
Mrs. Pagen gave $250,000 over the past 25 years to help restore the McHenry Mansion and talked to a local historian every Thursday to make sure her family history was preserved, a Modesto official said.
She hadn't been to Modesto since the city's 125th anniversary celebration in 1995.
"She was very pleased that her family history was being preserved," said Wayne Mathes, cultural services manager for the city of Modesto.
Mrs. Pagen was married to Edwin Wendell Pauley -- an oil man who ran Pauley Petroleum Co., advised several presidents and was a regent for the University of California system -- from 1937 until he died in 1981. Pauley Pavillion on the UCLA campus is named after her first husband.
She also was married to William R. Pagen, an oil executive who was chairman of Pauley Petroleum Co. after her first husband died, from 1985 until he died in 1993.
Mrs. Pagen, known as Bobbe Jean McHenry in her younger days, was born on Oct. 8, 1914 in Modesto.
Her great-grandfather, Robert McHenry, was an influential banker and rancher. He built the McHenry Mansion on 15th Street in 1883 and also founded the Modesto Irrigation District.
She was raised on the McHenry's Bald Eagle Ranch on Crawford Road, which her grandfather Oramil McHenry built in 1881.
She graduated from Modesto High School and later earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
Mrs. Pagen served on various corporate boards, including Pauley Petroleum and Bayou Oil.
She served on many foundation boards, including the Brain Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles, the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California at Berkeley, the John Douglas French Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease and the Los Angeles Orphanage Guild.
She was on the board of trustees for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the International Visitors Council of Los Angeles and was past president of the Edwin W. Pauley Foundation.
And she was actively involved with the Chancellor's Associates, which raises money for UCLA, and the Sproul Associates, which raises money for UC Berkeley.
Mrs. Pagen is survived by three children, Susan Pauley French, Stephen McHenry Pauley and Robert Van Petten Pauley; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at All Saint's Church in Beverly Hills.
Donations may be made to the McHenry Mansion Foundation, P.O. Box 642, Modesto 95353; or to the Douglas French Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease, 11620 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 270, Los Angeles 90025.
    * Barbara Jean McHenry Pauley Pagen, who served on the boards of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Los Angeles Orphanage Guild and the John Douglas French Foundation for Alzheimer's Disease and was a charter member of the Music Center's Blue Ribbon 400, has died. She was 87.
Pagen died Monday at her home in Beverly Hills.
Born Bobette Jean McHenry in Modesto, Pagen earned a bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley, where she served as president of the Class of 1936.
A year later she married Edwin W. Pauley, who became one of the nation's wealthiest oilmen, an advisor to presidents and a longtime member of the UC Board of Regents.
He donated $1 million to help develop the UCLA basketball arena that bears his name. He died in 1981.
In 1985, Barbara Pauley married William R. Pagen, an executive with Pauley Petroleum; he died in 1993.
In 1988, the Pagens donated $5 million to UCLA to establish graduate student fellowships in the College of Letters and Sciences.
In addition to her community work and philanthropic endeavors, Barbara Pagen was on the boards of Pauley Petroleum and Bayou Oil.
She is survived by three children, Susan Pauley French, Stephen McHenry Pauley and Robert Van Petten Pauley; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held today at 3 p.m. at All Saint's Church, 504 N. Camden Drive, Beverly Hills.

    21 February 2005
Robert Van Petten ("Buzz") Pauley died unexpectedly early Friday morning, February 18, 2005. He was 60 years old. He suffered fatal head injuries in a single vehicle auto crash near his home in the Santa Rosa area of northern California.
Buzz was born in Los Angeles, June 10, 1944. He lived there for most of his life until he relocated to Santa Rosa in 1982. He was the son on Edwin Wendell Pauley and Barbara McHenry Pauley, both now deceased. Edwin W. Pauley was the founder of Pauley Petroleum, Ambassador of Reparations after W.W.II, and a member of the University of California Board of Regents for 32 years.
After graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1967, Buzz pursued his dream of a political career. In 1968-69 he was a Coro Foundation fellow, and subsequently received his masters’ degree in political science from Occidental College in 1969. Although a lifelong Democrat, Buzz was appointed to serve under Republican Robert Finch as Assistant to the Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) in Washington, D.C. from 1969-70. After returning to Los Angeles in 1970 he twice ran for elective office; first, for a seat on the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees in 1971, and then for a seat in the California State Senate in 1974. He was also highly involved in Jimmy Carter’s 1976 Presidential campaign, and loved to tell people that Jimmy babysat his children for a short time while Carter was campaigning in Los Angeles.
After moving to Santa Rosa, his interests were focused primarily on business and community projects in that area. Like his father, Buzz displayed an uncanny ability to select business opportunities that prospered. He was able to merge that with his heritage of civic involvement and became well-known, well-respected, and well-loved by the greater Santa Rosa community. He correctly anticipated that the Pacific Rim, Japan in particular, would develop more interest in California’s wines, and so he founded Pauley Liquid Exports, a company which exported California wines to the Far East. He was also one of the founders of Sonoma National Bank, and served as a director from the bank’s opening in 1985. His devotion to the bank’s evolution into a regional powerhouse required weekly service, and he was justly proud of that evolution. At one point Buzz was the bank’s largest shareholder. He owned property and was highly involved in the proposed redevelopment of downtown Santa Rosa. He founded and contributed financially to The Heart of Santa Rosa, a non-profit organization devoted to the redevelopment and reuse of downtown, and believed that the city would be best served by adhering to a mixed-use model for redevelopment.
He was a philanthropist and was active in various causes. In the 1970’s he was the founding president of the California Children’s Lobby, an advocacy group for child seatbelt safety, and sat on the board of Pacific Oaks College and Children’s School in Pasadena. More recently in Santa Rosa he gave generously of his time and financial resources to Big Brothers, Sixth Street Playhouse, and the Sonoma Land Trust, as well as other worthy projects.
Buzz had a love of animals, jazz, and sports, in addition to his family. He enjoyed playing with his dogs and went so far as to hand-carry Koi fish from Japan to his pond in Santa Rosa. He could play piano by ear, copied the style of Bill Evans on occasion, and could muster a pretty decent imitation of Ray Charles when inspired. He was a loyal friend and loved to tell jokes, often self-deprecating. To celebrate his 50th birthday, Buzz and ten high school buddies rafted the Colorado River, and Buzz had everyone in stitches as he sang songs around the campfire. In high school, he was a halfback on the football team and a winning sprinter on the track team, and his love of football glued him to the TV Sundays and Monday nights. He was a big man, with a lot of heart who loved all his children and grandchildren very much.
Buzz is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Joanne Pauley; his daughter and son-in-law, Tasha and Andrew Pauley Baum; his stepdaughter, Courtney King; his two grandsons, Truman Doyle Pauley and Wilson Pauley Baum; his two ex-wives, Elsa Pauley Johnston and Kimberly King Pauley; his brother, Stephen McHenry Pauley; and his sister, Susan Pauley French.
There were be a memorial service for Buzz in Santa Rosa at 2 P.M., Saturday, February 26th, at the Paradise Ridge Winery, 4545 Thomas Lake Harris Drive.
In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Sonoma County, 5685 Rohnert Park, CA 94928. on 21 February 2005.
