John Bullock van Petten served as a chaplain during the Civil War from 15 June 1861 to 18 January 1866 in Albany, Albany, New York, USA, He was an officer in Company S of the 34th NY Infantry. He was promoted to Lt. Col. in Company S of the NY 160th Infantry on Sept. 20, 1862. He was then promoted to Brevet Brig-General on 13 Mar 1865.10
