William Bullock Stewart
1892 - 1983
Personal Information
Note
Dr. William Bullock Stewart, Sr. was born in 1892, in Washington County, KS, to Samuel and Emily Stewart. William grew up in Washington County, and then Clay Center, Clay County, KS. When he was a teenager, he worked in his father's brick manufacturing company. William was known to say that in his youth everything that he handled was either hot or hard. Because of this experience he resolved to get an education. He graduated from pharmacy school and dental school at an early age, and was commissioned in the US Army on 27MAR1919, prior to the end of World War I. He spent 30 years in the Army Dental Corps, and retired as a Colonel. While on active duty in the Army, he met his wife, Mary Catherine Phillips, in San Antonio, TX, and they were married in 1925 in San Antonio. His four children, William Bullock Stewart, Jr., Emily Catherine, Mary Ellen, and Roger Harvey Phillips were born while he was serving in various military postings. Upon retirement from the Army, Dr. Stewart practiced dentistry privately, in Clay Center, KS, for many years. In later years, he and his wife began to travel to Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and other locales during the Kansas winters, and return to Clay Center, KS, for the warmer months. His wife had abdominal medical problems in Italy on one of their trips, and was operated on there, resulting in removal of much of her intestines. She was flown back to Washington, DC to Walter Reed Army Medical Center , where she died shortly after, in 1978. His wifes remains were cremated and sent home to Clay Center, KS, and those affairs were handled by his daughter, Emily Catherine. He continued on for another 5 years, living at his daughter, Emily Catherine's house in Manhattan, KS. Emily was married to an Obstetrician/Gynecologist, named Gerald Mowry. While he was living there, he died of emaciation in 1983. This has raised questions in the family, regarding how someone could die of emaciation while living in the house of a licensed physician, particularly when you have more than enough money in the bank. His daughter had his remains cremated, and according to the funeral home, allowed his mother's maiden name of Van Petten to be mispelled as Van Pellen, which does not correspond to any of the families' other vital records for birth, marriage or death.
I have since learned that it's not uncommon to persons with dementia to be prone to severe weight loss for a variety of reasons. If William were suffering from dementia, it may have caused the emaciation.

Birth
28 August 1859 | Strawberry Twp, Oswego, New York, USA
Ellen Maria van Petten was born on 28 August 1859 in Strawberry Twp, Oswego, New York, USA. Birth date computed based on age of 29y 5m 6d on headstone. This is more consistent than the 1860 date since she appeared on the 1860 Federal census as age 7m.
1860
Birth
28 September 1860 | Strawberry Twp, Oswego, New York, USA
She was born on 28 September 1860 in Strawberry Twp, Oswego, New York, USA. This date of birth is not consitent with the fact that she appears on the 1860 US Census, age 7 months. The census was dated August 7 which is a couple of months prior to the September 28th date.

Harvey Leigh Shatto was born on 15 December 1859 in Angola, Steuben, Indiana, USA. The 1900 US census reports he was born in New York. All the other census records indicate he was born in Indiana.
1880~21
Note
1880
Harvey was engaged in marriage to Anna Margaret Boyer in Linn, Washington Co., KS (about 1877-1878) when he found himself in a personal dilemma of the times. He had made Ella Maria Van Patten "with child" and married her and had a son, but his love for Anna Margaret Boyer made the marriage to Ella Maria Van Patten a very short institution. After the divorce (if there even was a marriage), Harvey proposed marriage to his true love - Anna Margaret Boyer; but he was rejected by her and because of her broken heart and her love/hate with Harvey - she never married. Harvey did marry Anna's sister, Sarah Miranda Boyer in Linn, Washington Co., KS on April 1887 and had nine children.
Harvey later became a self-ordained evangelist that traveled up and down the west coast, leaving his family behind.
This information is not completely consistent with the recorded birth date of Harvey's son Floyd. It may be that this story is inaccurate or it is possible that Flyod's birth date was 'adjusted' to comport with the marriage date. in 1880.
