Personal Information

  • Note
Simon served under his brother Capt. John Van Patten in the 2nd Albany
Mililtia. It is likely he was the sharpshooter who carried Claas' "Old
Hollander" flintlock into battle, a weapon prized by seven generations including Capt. Adam Conde of the Glenville Horse Artillery. It was reported that he (Simon) felled an Indian walking along the far bank of the Mohawk; quite a feat of markmanship.

MIlitary Service

Capt Johannes van Patten served in the American Revolution from 1776 to 1780. On May 27, 1775, he was elected Captain of the 3rd Company of Schenectady Militia, and on October 20 a commission was issued in his name by the Provincial Congress. In Jan. 1776, he took part in the expedition to Johnstown. On Jan. 14, he was ordered to place guards at William De Graff's, Teunis Swart's and Lewis Peek's home to prevent any unfriendly persons or letters from passing upwards. On MAR177? he signed an agreement with Philip Schuyler for service at Lake George and Ticonderoga. On April 1, 1777, he was elected overseer of highways at Schenectady. He served throughout the campaign against General Burgoyne, was mentioned for bravery by General Gates in the "Battle of Saratoga" and was assigned to carry the news of the British surrender to Albany, according to family tradition. Captain Van Petten's company performed patrol and guard duty throughout his beat during the whole of the war, this being an especially exposed position. In 1778, he was at Switzbergh, in 1779 at Fort Paris, in 1780 in command of a detachment in pursuit of Sir John Johnson. Van Petten resigned from the service towards the close of the war.5,9

Laura's grandmother's last name was Shirley, so this is probably a family member that took in the children after her father died (I have no record of her father's death so this is speculation.)

MIlitary Service

Griffin William Forester served for the Confederacy in the Civil War from 26 May 1861 to 1 March 1862 in Virginia, USA. Enlisted as a Private in Company G
40th Infantry Regiment of Virginia. Records showed he was absent sick on Sept 30 1861 then listed as present in November and December 1861. He is listed as deserted in April of 1862. He is also listed as a POW so it's possible that he was captured rather than deserted. I haven't found any details about when or where he was captured.13,14,4
